PROGRAMS

VA Medical Benefits eligibility assistance program

  • Referral:  Through liaison with VA New York Harbor Healthcare System social workers and patient representatives, we refer veterans for assistance in obtaining their VA medical and other benefits.

  • Respectful GLBT sensitive treatment:  We strive to work with VA personnel who are GLBT sensitive so that our veterans receive respectful helpful assistance.

  • Advocacy:  AVERNY will advocate for veterans with complaints about treatment at VA Medical Centers, via liaison with VAMC patient representatives.

  • Sensitivity Training:  We hope to provide GLBT sensitivity training, in conjunction with other GLBT organizations, to VA Medical Center personnel and physicians.

  • Healthcare and HIV/AIDS liaison:  We hope to liaison with NYC region GLBT health  and HIV/AIDS service organizations to assist their clients who are veterans in obtaining their VA medical and other benefits.

  • Transgender Veteran's Issues, forums, and referrals: AVERNY is
    committed to advocating for equitable treatment of all veterans.
    We will refer transgender veteran needs, where possible; and
    advocate for services and treatment.  We hope to host or co-sponsor forums on transgender veteran issues.

Parade Marching
  • Marching in Gay Pride and Veterans Day Parades to demonstrate our pride and presence in having served our country.

Political Action
  • Advocacy of GLBT rights in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Endorsement of selected GLBT rights legislation

Social Events
  • Group dinners, social gathering, forums on rights issues, camaraderie
  • Monthly AVERNY meetings

Community Projects
  • Diversity and senior GLBT veterans outreach projects
  • We hope to provide social gatherings for veterans in VA
    nursing facilities.
  • We hope to provide volunteers to accompany senior GLBT veterans
    to their VA medical appointments.
